Active: No
Country:Svalbard
Site:Svalbard
Responsible Countries: Poland,
Timezone:UTC/GMT +01:00 hours
Vegetation Type:Tundra
Responsible Person:Andrzej Kostrzewski

Climatic conditions are reflecting the quasi-continetal situation with relatively low precipitation (below 200 mm/year) and temperature amplitude higher than along the western shore of Spitsbergen (eg. Hornsund or Kaffiøyra).

Permafrost present but thickness not known.

MEAN ANNUAL GROUND TEMPERATURE AT OR NEAR DEPTH OF ZERO ANNUAL AMPLITUDE (°C)

Year or 12 month interval for mean reported above beginning of August 2005

AIR TEMPERATURE AND SNOW COVER THICKNESS/DENSITY MEASUREMENTS AT THE BOREHOLE SITE (indicate frequency of observations):

Air temperature: Yes [X] No [  ]    Snow thickness: Yes[ ] No[X]   Density: Yes [ ] No[X] Summer series (JUL-AUG 1985, 2000) year-round (JUL 2001-AUG 2003) frequency - 6h

NAME AND LOCATION OF CLOSEST CLIMATE STATION

SVALBARD LUFTHAVN – LONGYEARBYEN; 78o15’N, 15o30’E; distance from borehole – about 60 km.

Depth:30 m
Drilling Angle:90 °
Diameter:10 cm
Deepest Sensor:30 m
Drilling Method:Air, Hammer: Modular Drilling RIB “ Voyager”
Date Drilled:01. Jan 2005
Type:boat, snowmobile and helicopter, no roads
Type:sea shore (fjord)
Distance From Heat:100 m
Aspect:192.4 °
Permafrost Zone:Continuous
Landform:Mid-Holocene rised marine terrace
Lithology:The profile of the active layer of permafrost, unfrozen during summertime down to 1.2 m, showed a uniform composition of sandy-gravel material, loose-structured, with well-rounded grains and partly oriented longer axes. Similar structure is observed in the 2.5 m high cliff, located close to the sea, about 50 m to the W from the described site. Deeper geological setting was examined using georesistivity method. Preliminary results show that it is possible to expect under Holocene age marine cover a layer of gypsum/anhydrite porous rocks in which may occur fillings of highly mineralized liquid.
Morphology:Plain
