This borehole was drilled in an old dry river channel in Adventdalen. The site has c. 3m snow in winter in contrast to borehole Snow Patch 1 (SN-B-1), which has only few decimeters of snow, located few meters away. Unfrozen water was encountered during drilling. This caused problems both for the drilling itself and for the installation of the casing. The hole was drilled to 12m, but was not possible to install the casing deeper than to 5.4m. In summer 2008, the casing was filled with ice. This ice has to be removed before a thermistorstring can be installed.
Permafrost present but thickness not known.
GROUND TEMPERATURE AT ZERO ANNUAL AMPLITUDE OR AT LOWERMOST THERMISTOR
Hydro Year; Locality in borehole ; Depth(m); Temp. ; Max-min ; Days
2008-2009 ; Lowermost thermistor ; -5.00 ; -2.4 ; 0.3 ; 254 (not full year)
MEASUREMENTS AT THE BOREHOLE SITE
Observation of air temperature: Yes
Observation of snow thickness: Yes
