The system of long - term permafrost observations was organized on the permafrost site of Russian Scientific Center on Spitsbergen in summer 2016 (Demidov et al., 2016).

Borehole 9 is drilled in the crater-like depression in the center of pingo Fili in the middle Grendalen valley 15 km south-east from Barentsburg (pingo height is 12 over the valley and crater depth is 3 m). Surface has no vegetation due to ongoing thawing and solifluction in the crater, adjacent to the borehole is small lake. Drilling showed 1 m of loam over massive pingo ice core which extends down to 22 m and is underlayed by marine clay. Bedrock was not reached.

In this borehole automated thermistor cable 15 m length with spacing 0,75 m is inserted permanently.

Permafrost present but thickness not known.
