The system of long - term permafrost observations was organized on the permafrost site of Russian Scientific Center on Spitsbergen in summer 2016 (Demidov et al., 2016).

Borehole 8 was drilled in April 2017 on circular uplifted terrace (relative height 10 m) on the right bank of the Gren river. Drilling showed 4 m of loam and gravel deposits underlayed by marine clay down to 21,35 m, ice content was highest (up to massive ice) at depths 4,2-4,7 m and 12,6-15 m. Bedrock was not reached.

In this borehole automated thermistor cable 15 m length with spacing 0,75 m was inserted.

Permafrost present but thickness not known.
